W-APT- WIDA ACCESS Placement Test
The W-APT is the English Language Proficiency Screener that is given to Kindergarten and First Semester First Grade students in North Carolina to determine if the student qualifies as an English Learner (EL). The Kindergarten W-APT is a paper based English language proficiency screener given to incoming kindergarteners and students in Grade 1 (first semester only) who identify a language other than English during the HLS process. Kindergarten Students enrolled in the first Semester will be administered only the Speaking and Listening Domains of the Kindergarten W-APT. Kindergarten Students who score 26 or below on the Speaking and Listening Domains combined are identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) and qualify for the ESL program. Students who score 27 or above are identified as Never Limited English Proficient and do not qualify for the ESL program.
Kindergarten students in 2nd semester and first grade students in 1st semester will take all four domains of the Kindergarten W-APT (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing). Students qualify for English Learner (EL) services, if one or more of the following domain criteria apply:
Combined L/S score is 26 or below
Reading Score is 13 or below
Writing Score is 16 or below
