K-5 Science Instructional Support Overview
Purpose
K-5 Elementary Science is part of the Department of Curriculum Instruction and Innovation at the Administrative Services Center of Vance County Schools. The elementary science curriculum offers students the opportunity to observe and analyze the natural world in Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science concepts through experiential learning experiences, collaborative groups, and technology. The elementary science department oversees and supports the development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment for science in the 11 public elementary schools of Vance County.
Overview
The K-5 Science Instructional Coordinator is responsible for the following to support our community, parents, administrators, teachers, and students in Vance County Schools:
- Coordinates the selection of instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and textbooks to support the implementation of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS) Science standards
- Assesses the impact of the science curriculum with the overall curriculum to ensure students receive a balanced offering.
- Assists with the development of district assessments for K-5 science (5th grade only).
- Plans and facilitates monthly Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for all elementary science teachers.
- Analyzes and evaluates state and district assessment results and recommends appropriate corrective instruction modifications.
