Secondary English Language Arts

Purpose:

The Secondary English Language Arts Department, grades 6-12,  is part of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation. Secondary English Language Arts Department oversees and supports the development and implementation of core (Tier 1) curriculum, assessment, and instruction for Secondary English Language Arts in Vance County School District.

Overview:

The Secondary English Language Arts Coordinator (6-12) support our community, parents, administrators, teachers, and students in the Vance County  School District by:

  • Coordinates a shared vision and practice in secondary literacy via the NCLiteracy Instructional Standards learning and instruction across all disciplines  to ensure all students are effective readers, writers, and communicators;
  • Provides direction and leadership in the development of a comprehensive ELA curriculum for all secondary (grade 6-12) schools, including scope and sequence documents, pacing guides, units of study, and formative assessments.
  • Ensures the secondary ELA program is in alignment with the NC Standard Course of Study for 6-12 ELA.
  • Aligns and coordinates the selection of  instructional materials for Secondary English Language Arts to the NC Standard Course of Study for 6-12 ELA, ensuring a rigorous, guaranteed & viable curriculum for all students;
  • Support the effective implementation of the adopted instructional materials for 6-12 ELA
  • Identify, design, and coordinate professional development opportunities in Secondary English Language Arts for district teachers;
  • Develops and facilitates district and school-based professional learning for secondary English Language Arts  teachers to assist in raising the level of instructional performance and student achievement in Secondary English Language Arts 
  • Analyzes state and district assessment data and recommends appropriate instructional modification to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom.
  • Collaborates with English Language Arts teachers, administrators, content coordinators, departments within the office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation  as well as other divisions by providing technical assistance and support in the development and/or implementation of district programs, practices, and processes.
  • Maintain awareness of, evaluate, and communicate current research on best practices for Secondary English Language Arts instruction and communicate the implications of this research to all stakeholders.
