Secondary Social Studies

Purpose:

The K-12 Social Studies Instructional Specialist provides leadership for the administration and coordination of the Social Studies program for grades K-12 and ensures the effective implementation of the North Carolina State Social Studies Standards and North Carolina Literacy Instruction Standards.

The K-12 Social Studies Instructional Specialist develops, implements, and monitors the K-12 Social Studies program within the schools and provides leadership for district-wide Social Studies initiatives, including the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act and Inquiry Design Model. 

Overview:

The K-12 Social Studies Specialist is responsible for the following in supporting social studies with our community, parents, administrators, teachers, and students in Vance County Schools:

  • Support the K-12 social studies program with reference to the vision and mission of VCS and its pillars of focus: innovation, high-performance culture, experiential learning, and equity
  • Create engaging Professional Learning Communities (PLC) experiences to increase teacher effectiveness in developing and delivering engaging and rigorous learning experiences in the K-12 Social Studies program at VCS
  • Support K-12 social studies teachers in using best practices for innovation and differentiation in social studies to meet the needs of VCS students and improve student learning and engagement based on requests for support or identified needs
  • Engage with social studies teachers, administrators, and other district social studies coordinators in implementing the Inquiry Design Model (IDM) throughout the K-12 Social Studies program at VCS
  • Identify and support areas of improvement in curriculum and instruction in K-12 Social Studies curriculum and instruction at Vance County Schools (VCS) based on feedback, surveys, and observations.
  • Collaborate with social studies teachers, administrators, and other C&I specialists in reinforcing the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) framework within the K-12 Social Studies program at VCS 
  • Evaluate with the K-12 Social Studies program at VCS through the lens of Cultural Responsive Education (CRE) for areas of improvement in student engagement
