Vance County Schools Substitute Teachers

Vance County Schools is always seeking dedicated individuals to serve as substitute teachers in our district. Qualified substitute teachers play a vital role in maintaining student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

Eligibility Requirements:

To become a substitute teacher with Vance County Schools, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma, OR
  • Be at least 18 years old with a GED and 24 semester hours from an accredited college or university
  • Complete substitute training offered through App-Garden University
  • Pass a drug screening and background check
  • Complete the VCS Substitute Application

Substitute Teacher Training (via App-Garden University):

Training is required for all substitutes to ensure district compliance. A valid email address is needed to register.

Select one of the following orientation courses based on your experience:

  • Vance County Schools Substitute Teacher Orientation with Effective Substitute Training – $39.00
    For new substitutes without a teaching certificate or Effective Teacher Training (ETT) certification. 
  • Vance County Schools Substitute Teacher Orientation – $29.00
    For new substitutes with a teaching certificate or ETT certification. 
  • Vance County Schools Returning Substitute Teacher Orientation – $19.00
    For substitutes who worked with VCS during the previous school year. 

👉 Be sure to print or download your completion certificate—you will need to bring it during onboarding.

Next Steps:

  1. Complete the VCS Substitute Application online.
  2. Complete the appropriate training course through App-Garden University.
  3. You will receive an email from Yulanda Henderson (yhenderson@vcs.k12.nc.us) with instructions for your drug screening and background check.
  4. Submit your training completion certificate during onboarding.

 

Rate of Pay:

  • $93/day – For substitutes with ETT or EST certification (certificate on file)
  • $121/day – For certified teachers with a valid license on file
  • Half-day assignments are paid at half the daily rate
