Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. K. Smart
Hello! My name is Kathy Smart and I am currently teaching kindergarten. I was the reading intervention teacher here, but I now have the privilege to work with our amazing kindergarteners! There are so many things that your children will learn this year. Kindergarten is the foundation to reading and through phonics and writing, your child will have the opportunities to grow as a successful student. Repetition is big key for your child as this will strengthen their memory. Learning how to get along with others and work with partners is also a key learning skill they will need to master. I have an amazing partner in Mrs. Lassiter and she has helped paved the way for me coming into the year half way. My goal is to grow your child to the appropriate levels at which they can become successful in first grade.
Although we do a lot of work here at school, you the parent, is essential in growing our kindergarteners at home. While students have homework Monday thru Thursday, it is essential for parents to check to see what their child can accomplish on their own and what they may need help with. Reading every night to your child increases total comprehension and strengthens memory and retention. Please encourage your child to love books. If they see you reading, they are more likely to have a love for books and reading. We have the i-Ready computer program to assist in their learning. They should be getting 45 minutes each in reading and math. Your child has an i-Ready account and if you have internet access at home, your child can continue to add minutes to their goal. Each week, the two students who have the most minutes in math and reading will receive a certificate. At the end of the year, the 2 students who had the most minutes in math and reading will receive a special lunch with me.
We have so many wonderful things to do here at school and I want your child to love school and become a successful student. I am blessed to be a part of your child’s present and have the best hopes for the future.
Please feel free to contact me at school or by email at any time. A best time to reach me is from 11:45-12:20 or after school.
