Our History
Advanced Teaching Roles are innovative positions that extend beyond traditional classroom responsibilities, emphasizing teacher recruitment and retention, student achievement, and career advancement. These roles are designed to provide experienced educators with leadership opportunities to deepen their impact on teachers, students, and the educational system.
In 2016, the North Carolina General Assembly created the Teacher Compensation Models and Advanced Teaching Roles program. Vance County Schools was one of the first six selected districts to be a part of the pilot grant. During this time, our district partnered with Public Impact to implement Opportunity Culture, an initiative to transform staffing in order to enhance student learning. To learn more about Opportunity Culture, click here. We began implementation with the roles of Multi-Classroom Leaders, Extended Impact Teachers, and Reach Associates.
In 2023, Vance County Schools was one of eight partner districts with TIP (The Innovation Project) to receive the Teacher and School Leader Incentive (TSL) grant to support the Reimagining Teaching Talent (RTT) program. With this grant, we were able to expand our roles to include Master Teachers and Teacher Development Specialists.
Our district continues to reach more students with excellent teaching and coaching through our various Advanced Teaching Roles.

Coordinator
Hello! My name is Casey Jackson, and I am the Advanced Teaching Roles Coordinator for Vance County Schools.
Prior to becoming coordinator, I served as a teacher, multi-classroom leader, and administrator. I hold an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a graduate degree in Administration and Supervision, both from Longwood University in Farmville, VA. I am licensed in VA and NC.
My strong belief in advanced teaching roles is deeply rooted in the conviction that they are essential for fostering a culture of excellence in education. I firmly advocate for roles that prioritize not only pedagogical expertise but also continuous professional development, innovation, and coaching. These advanced roles empower educators to reach new heights in their teaching practice, adapt to changing educational paradigms, and inspire students to achieve their highest potential. By investing in these roles, I am confident that we can create a dynamic learning environment where both teachers and students flourish, ultimately leading to improved outcomes and lifelong learning success.
Math Teacher Development Specialists
A Math Teacher Development Specialist serves as an instructional coach dedicated to enhancing math teaching practices. This role involves collaborating with educators to identify instructional needs, providing personalized coaching and professional development, and modeling effective teaching strategies. The specialist supports teachers in analyzing student performance data and implementing strategies to improve classroom outcomes, ultimately fostering a collaborative and growth-focused environment for both teachers and students.
Multi-Classroom Leaders
The Multi-Classroom Leader (MCL) role is pivotal within our educational framework, functioning as an instructional coach at the school level. MCLs provide targeted support in specific content areas to teams of 2 to 6 teachers, focusing on enhancing teaching practices and elevating student learning outcomes. With shared responsibility for the academic performance of all students within the team, MCLs foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and excellence. This position embodies a commitment to instructional excellence and student achievement, driving collective growth and success within the school community.
Master Teachers
The Master Teacher (MT) is a pivotal role in each school, aimed at elevating the standards of teaching and learning. As a model of equitable, rigorous, and effective instruction, the MT will demonstrate high-leverage instructional practices, ensuring all students receive the necessary support for successful learning outcomes.
Extended Impact Teachers
The Extended Impact Teacher is a vital member of our educational institution's faculty, responsible for creating an environment that promotes student success and maximizes learning outcomes. By extending their reach to deliver instruction to a larger percentage of students, this advanced teaching role goes beyond traditional teaching responsibilities. Extended Impact Teachers have a proven history of excellent teaching and student growth.
Reach Associates
he Reach Associate plays a vital role in supporting teachers and enhancing the educational experience for students within our organization. This position involves providing valuable assistance that enhances teaching and learning.
"Reach Associates (RA) are highly qualified paraprofessionals who support teacher teams, often primarily working with one multi-classroom leader and/or an extended impact teacher. Reach Associates provide both instructional and non instructional support, completing administrative tasks, supervising student behavior, and aiding instruction by supervising time on projects, skills practice, or digital learning. Reach associates provide helpful release time, so multi-classroom leaders can coach their team teachers, and extended impact teachers can teach a larger student load." (-Public Impact)
