AdVance Academy graduates 86 seniors at June Commencement

The Class of 2019 at AdVance Academy received high school diplomas during the school's commencement exercise held in the evening of June 6, 2019, at McGregor Hall in downtown Henderson.

There were 86 seniors who received their diplomas.

Principal Stephanie Ayscue led the celebration of the graduating seniors' accomplishments. She praised all of the class members for their hard work and dedication to complete their high school education successfully.

The graduates marched into the auditorium, filled with over 800 well wishers who included parents, other family members, friends and local officials. They each wore their Spartan green caps and gowns. Once they were assembled on the stage, the graduates stood with accompanying dignitaries as the Color Guard for the Vance County High School Air Force Junior ROTC presented the U.S. and N.C. Flags and "The Star Spangled Banner" was played.

Special scholarship presentations were made to several graduates.

Retired U.S. Congresswoman Eva Clayton, who represented North Carolina and lives in Warren County, was the keynote speaker for the commencement. Clayton was very eloquent with her remarks. She talked about the determination of the graduates, many of whom overcame lots of obstacles to complete high school. She also encouraged them to continue to be determined throughout their lives to reach their goals.

Ayscue led the presentation of diplomas to each graduate. She was joined by Superintendent Anthony Jackson and Vance County Board of Education Chairwoman Dorothy Gooche. Others involved in the presentations were Dr. Cindy Bennett and Dr. Trixie Brooks, both assistant superintendents for Vance County Schools; Mark Lawhorne and Dr. Darwin Carter, both assistant principals at AdVance Academy; Marsha Harris, counselor at AdVance Academy; and Dr. LaDonna Cooper, liaison with Graduation Alliance which partners with the school system to provide the school's program.
