North Carolina's Teacher of the Year, Freebird McKinney, visited seven of our schools on January 24, as part of his travels across the state to see what public schools are offering students.
McKinney, a high school social studies teacher with Alamance-Burlington Schools, is taking the year off from his teaching duties to represent educators across the state.
Before his one-year reign ends, he will visit all 100 counties and most of the public school systems in North Carolina.
McKinney says he loves seeing the innovations teachers are using to reach students in their classrooms and wants to share outstanding strategies and programs with state officials and education colleagues.
While in Vance County, he was accompanied by Kedecia Stewart, the 2017-2018 Vance County Schools Teacher of the Year and North Central Region Teacher of the Year, to all of the schools. McKinney and Stewart visited E.M. Rollins Elementary School, Aycock Elementary School, Vance County Early College High School, Vance County High School, STEM Early High School, Pinkston Street Elementary School and Vance County Middle School.
