Marisol Hernandez, a third grader at E.M. Rollins Elementary School, has been selected as the first Student Spotlight award winner for Vance County Schools this year.

Marisol was surprised with the award presentation in her classroom during the morning of September 18.

She won the award for her outstanding character as a model student and her caring nature towards her classmates and school staff members.

Nancy Wykle, publisher of The Daily Dispatch, which is Henderson's local newspaper, presented Marisol with a bouquet of balloons and a gift basket filled with books and school supplies. She will later be honored with other student award winners by the Vance County Board of Education and at a banquet held in Henderson in the spring. Marisol and her family also can participate in a free trip to Washington, D.C., with other award winners in June 2019.

The award program is co-sponsored by The Daily Dispatch and the school system, with support from the Vance County Public School Foundation, Mako Medical Laboratories, Prim Residential and Rentals and the Henderson Kiwanis Club.
