VCS Unveils a New Vending Machine–for Books!

Book Vending Machine Ribbon Cutting

Vance County Schools is proud to announce the unveiling of Inchy the Bookworm, the new book vending machines that will be housed at each of our ten elementary schools. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was hosted by the The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce and L.B. Yancey Elementary on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at 8:15 a.m.

L.B. Yancey Elementary is the first school in the district to welcome this new addition. The book vending machine has rows filled with a diverse selection of books for readers on every grade level. All of the books are free, and can be acquired by a gold token, designed specifically for the book vending machine. Students can earn gold tokens as a reward for positive behavior.

“We are so grateful to have an opportunity to support students with building their home library”, said L.B. Yancey Principal Dr. Shannon Bullock. “We encourage our students to read at home and having the book vending machine makes it possible for students to read a variety of books that interest them."

Over the coming weeks, each of our ten elementary schools will have their own book vending machine. The book vending machines were bought by the District as part of its literacy initiative to encourage reading and building student’s personal libraries.

“I’m excited for the book vending machine! This is such an innovative way to instill the love of reading throughout our building,” said Principal Letitia Fields of New Hope Elementary.

Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine, developed by Global Vending Group, can hold up to 300 books. The book vending machine will be refilled regularly with graphic novels, chapter books and easy readers to meet the varying needs of our students.
