L.B. Yancey Bulldogs Host Career Day and Expo

LBY Career Fair 2023

Prior to today, fifth grader Zoe had no idea what she wanted to be when she grew up; however, at the end of L.B. Yancey Elementary School’s Career Day and Expo, she knew and expressed with much enthusiasm that she wanted to become a photographer.

The event was held on March 22, 2023, in the school’s gym. The theme of L.B. Yancey’s Career Day & Expo was “I Am Tomorrow”. This was the second staging of the event, which featured students dressing up as doctors, chefs, police officers and more. Even staff members joined in, wearing different career outfits. Parents were invited to join in on the festivities along with their children. Last year’s Career Day was held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions.

There was much to learn and do, as career professionals set up display areas. On the list of specially invited professionals was:

  • Vance County Schools’ Center for Innovation Robotics Team

  • Spectrum News 1 Meteorologist, Vernon Turner

  • Maria Parham Primary Care Physician, Dr. Gary Smith

  • Fitness Trainer, Jessica Rice-Hawkins

  • Entrepreneur, Jinell Cheek of Nellie C Photography

  • Barber, Richard Terry

  • Licensed Funeral Director, Joshua Hicks

  • Musician, Justen Ward

  • Entrepreneur, Taylor Evans with Cricut Personalizations

  • Representatives from the Walmart Distribution Center

  • Vance County Sheriff’s Office

The day started with a parade, where students walked the hallways to the sound of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, while others who had lined the hallways, clapped and cheered. Students held handmade posters, bearing inspirational quotes and messages.

Chairperson of the school’s Career Day committee, Mrs. Alicia Clarke, expressed that,  “The hope [of the Career Day and Expo] was that allowing students to see different professionals at work would motivate students to set goals for themselves, then work towards achieving those goals. If this career day was any indication of what is to come, then the world will be in good hands.”

LB Yancey Principal, Dr. Shannon Bullock, expressed, “The school’s Career Day and Expo was a very successful event. The students and parents were so excited to see all the different career choices provided for them. Students were able to see successful individuals from Henderson and other nearby cities, and know that they are able to achieve anything they set their mind to. The Career Day committee did a phenomenal job organizing this event.”
