LB Yancey Elementary Hosts Career Fair

LB Yancey Elementary Hosts Career Fair

Nurses, doctors, civil servants and a host of other mini-career professionals filled the halls of the L B Yancey Elementary School on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 signaling the start of Career Day. The event was hosted under the theme: “I Have a Voice - My Career, My Choice”. The event coordinator, Mrs. Alicia Eccleston-Clarke, said that the event was planned with the students in mind. “Our students need to have something to work towards.” “Exposing them to the career opportunities available to them will hopefully serve as a way to motivate students to work hard and to do their best in school”. She believes that they have so much potential but that some students need a little more inspiration in order to achieve their goals.

She was supported by committee members Mrs. Connie Jones and Mrs. Cherie Dixon-Rose, school guidance counselor and Multi-Grade Classroom Leader (MCL) respectively. All hands
were on deck as head of the bulldog house; the principal, Dr. Shannon Bullock, and other LB Yancey staff members gave their full support in making sure the event came to fruition.

From the decorated bulletin board displays to the banner and decor, kids were excited from the moment they walked into the building. “I was overjoyed to see the level of participation from all stakeholders. Students being able to directly communicate with professionals in their desired careers will inspire them to continue working hard to achieve their goals,” said Dr. Bullock.

Nathan Durham, a fourth grader, shared “It was so amazing! I wanted to be a soldier or cop or firefighter or anything! I couldn't choose so I dressed as a Funeral Director.”

The staff and students were joined by a team of top notch professionals that sparked much interest and excitement as they joined via Zoom to share details about their respective careers. Present were: Ms. Estena Bradley - Nurse Practitioner in the areas of Gynecology and Obstetrics from Maria Parham Women's Care, Oxford, NC, Mr. Vernon Turner - on-air meteorologist for Spectrum News 1, Raleigh, North Carolina, Judge Caroline S. Burnette - district court judge with the State of North Carolina, Mr. Charles Gunby - chief executive officer of CG Project Management, Electrical, and Construction LLC, Mr. Michael Rice, P.E. teacher/track & basketball coach with Vance County Middle School, Mr. Carlos Gunby - firefighter and Paramedic EMT, Mrs. Camisha Gavin, Realtor with CC & Co. Real Estate and Mr. Jason Brown, Former NFL football Player, author & current full-time farmer with First Fruits Farm. Students were able to interact with the guests and ask questions.

The day's activities ended with students parading the hallways to show off their career day attire. Members of staff were dressed up too! Career Day 2022 at the bulldog house is definitely one to be remembered.
